.Aleen - I just wanted to thank you (belatedly) for all the information and
help you gave us as we planned for our recent trip on the Mickelson Trail.
We had a fantastic time! We had to alter our route a couple of times, but
that just meant we drove (instead of biked) to see Mt. Rushmore and Crazy
Horse Memorial. That was a good thing, since it snowed that day!
Anyway, we were so impressed by the trail and all the obvious hard work it
must have taken to bring it to fruition - thanks again from a couple of
Coloradoans for your, and others, foresight and hard work.

My brother and I bicycled the whole George Mickelson trail in August of 2003. We were very impressed. It was amazing. We really appreciated the water wells, especially in the southern portions of the trail! Thanks again for such a great trail.

I'm heading to the Black Hills and will thru-bike the trail, possibly in both directions. This site provided the most useful information. I will be sure to patronize your affiliates.

Rushmore Bicycles shuttled us and our bikes from Hill City up to Dumont, and we then biked the 32 miles back -- took about 5 hrs with several nice breaks along the way. Absolutely loved the scenery and the remoteness of this northern section of the trail, most of it well away from any accompanying roadway, winding through valleys and tunnels, and running alongside Rapid Creek. Also enjoyed its mostly downhill grade -- downhill all the way from Dumont to Mystic, then a moderately challenging climb (about 4-5 mi) from Mystic up to Redfern, and finally downhill again from Redfern into Hill City. The 20-mile downhill ride from Dumont to Mystic is plenty easy enough for most kids.

The trail is a treasure, it is beautifully maintained, unique in the variety of terrain and scenery, and just as interesting coming back on a section as going in the other direction. Segments are appropriate for beginners, and the trail heads are great. The trail pamphlet is well produced, and a book we bought about the trail in Hill City [Rushmore Cycle] is even more interesting. The trail is worth traveling to, even if the rest of the hills were not such a lovely spot. The only warning, we started one day from Edgemont, and the bathrooms were locked. The library staff let us use theirs, but be prepared since the next facility is about 7 miles up the trail.

It would be nice if a few camp sites could be designated along the route at locations unobtrusive to landowners. Many trekkers would benefit and it would add yet another dimension to the trail.

We planned a family trip this summer with our 10 year old and our 7 year old.
We found all the information we needed at your website and all of the affiliates
were so helpful. Rita at the happy Trails, Carol at Silver Creek, and Dan at
Carsten's Cottages all went over and above anything we could have hoped for to
make our trip an enjoyable success. It was so wonderful to have a welcoming
place to stay after each day's ride with two children (who were real workhorses,
by the way!) The trail was beautiful and so were the people. Thank You!! We
can't wait to go again. Molly, Kevin, Andrew, and Rachel Laramie, Wy

Great shots of this year's Big Mick. May when I can no longer run, and take
up cycling, I'll become a member of that ambitious group of cyclists. I'd like
to thank you for adding a couple of shots from the Deadwood-Mickelson Trail
Marathon, and thank you again for being in charge of the aid station at mile
12.... hope to see you there again next year. Jerry Dunn, Race Director

My father and I ride the entire trail from Deadwood to Edgemont over a two day period starting every fathers day. Next year will be our fourth through ride of the trail. We have also been riding portions of the trail since the days before the trestles were finished and you had to carry your bike across. Every year the experience becomes more and more positive, and we reflect often on our favorite portions of the trail, and on all of the great memories we have. We cannot express how much we appreciate having this wonderful trail right in our neighborhood (we live in Rapid City, though I attend college in Chicago.) Thank you for everything! Andrew Smith,
